Emergency Medical Services

 

CERTIFICATE

The Emergency Medical Services Professional certificate will provide students with the skills necessary to respond to medical and trauma emergencies, and pass the core competencies exam for licensure through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Students will gain skills in human anatomy, clear decision-making in medical emergencies, incident management, handling hazardous materials, and ensuring patient, public and personal safety. Students will earn their CPR certification. These skills will qualify EMS graduates to work as emergency room technicians, ambulance clinicians, 911 dispatchers and rescue teams, law enforcement, security services, and others. In addition, this curriculum prepares students to seamlessly transfer into the next step in their education to become a Paramedic, Community Paramedic, Medical Assistant, Advanced EMT, Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.

 

PROGRAM FACT SHEET

Students completing this certificate will be able to: 

  • Use correct medical terminology and nomenclature in the correct context in order to effectively communicate health/medial information and concepts to others; 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical responsibilities of EMS and other healthcare providers; 
  • Calculate various I.V. drip rates for patients undergoing I.V. therapy;  
  • Develop problem solving and self-assessment skills and make appropriate decisions regarding a variety of procedural situations; 
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies related to various body systems;  
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact with patients and work effectively as a member of the emergency medical services team;  
  • Discuss various EMS systems both local/state and international;  
  • Use and adapt to current technology used in emergency medical services practices; 
  • Demonstrate understanding of administering patient prescribed drugs to patients; and 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the current duties of an EMT, practicing within scope of practice.

No test scores or preparatory course work is required. A background check is needed, once in the program.

This EMT program prepares the student with the training to interview and start working as an EMT right after graduation.  Field clinical sites are with potential employers. Our graduates have been employed by Allina health Ambulance and Emergency Departments, Essentia Health, Lakes Region EMS and a few out of state ambulance services. 

USDE Professional Licensure Disclosure:

  • The Pine Technical and Community College EMS Professional curriculum is designed to help prepare students to sit for the professional licensure exam for Minnesota. At this time, Pine Technical and Community College is unable to make a determination if the EMS Professional program meets the licensing requirement for any state or US protectorate besides Minnesota. You will want to contact the licensing board in which state you intend to pursue licensure for their requirements, below we provide a link to a list of each state licensing board.
