EARLY MIDDLE COLLEGE

PTCC’s Early Middle College (EMC) program provides students from participating schools and alternative learning programs with the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Early Middle College students earn both high school and college credit while receiving additional support from their high school and PTCC staff. Students have the opportunity to explore career interests, reduce the cost of college, and begin working toward a certificate, diploma, or degree before high school graduation.

PTCC’s Early Middle College program is currently offered in partnership with the following schools and alternative learning programs:

  • East Central Crossroads
  • Hinckley-Finlayson Empower Learning Center
  • Mora Alternative Learning Center
  • Norse Area Learning Center
  • Pine City Alternative Learning Center

Because Early Middle College is a partnership program, participation is determined collaboratively between the student, the high school, and PTCC.

If your school is not currently listed and you are interested in learning more about Early Middle College opportunities, please contact the PTCC Director of Dual Enrollment.

Unlike traditional PSEO, EMC students are selected in partnership with their high school.

Juniors and Seniors

  • Must receive a favorable recommendation from a designated high school official.

Sophomores and Freshmen

  • Limited opportunities may be available at the discretion of the participating high school.

Because each school may structure its Early Middle College program differently, students should work closely with their high school counselor and the PTCC Director of Dual Enrollment to determine eligibility and develop an academic plan.

How to Apply

Step 1: Confirm Participation with Your High School

Students should work with their high school counselor to determine eligibility and participation in their school’s Early Middle College program.

Step 2: Apply to PTCC

Complete the PTCC application if you are new to the college.

Step 3: Submit Your High School Transcript

Provide a copy of your current high school transcript (or homeschool transcript) so we can verify eligibility and review course placement options. Transcripts can be uploaded here or emailed to pseo@pine.edu.

Step 4: Submit the EMC Notice of Student Registration (NOSR) Form

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Early Middle College Notice of Student Registration (NOSR) form is required each semester for all PSEO students.

  • Section 1 must be completed and signed by the student. If the student is under age 18, a parent or guardian must also sign.
  • Section 2 must be completed and signed by a high school counselor or designated school official.

Completed forms may be submitted to pseo@pine.edu or delivered to the PTCC Admissions Office.

Step 4: Complete Course Placement Requirements

EMC students must meet the same course placement requirements as all PTCC students. Placement may be determined using:

  • High school coursework and GPA
  • ACT, SAT, or MCA scores
  • Previous college coursework
  • ACCUPLACER assessment results, if needed

ACT, SAT, or MCA scores may be uploaded here or emailed to pseo@pine.edu. In many cases, these scores are included on your high school transcript, so a separate copy may not be required.

Step 6: Watch for Your Admission Decision

Once all required documents have been received and reviewed, you will receive your admission decision by email.

Early Middle College students are encouraged to explore career interests and select a pathway that aligns with their educational and career goals.

Once a major or career pathway has been identified, PTCC and high school staff work collaboratively to create an academic plan that supports both high school graduation requirements and progress toward a college credential.

Each semester, students receive a schedule designed to ensure every class they take moves them closer to achieving their goals. This coordinated approach helps students maximize their time, earn meaningful college credits, and stay on track for success.

Whether your goal is to enter the workforce, earn a certificate, complete a diploma, or continue toward a degree, PTCC offers a variety of pathways to help you succeed.

Explore Programs

After being admitted to PTCC, new EMC students will work with PTCC staff to register for their first semester of classes. Registration assistance is provided to help students select courses that align with their academic goals, high school graduation requirements, and future career plans.

Students are encouraged to review the class schedule prior to their registration appointment and come prepared with questions about courses and program options.

Returning EMC students will register each semester with the assistance of their assigned advisor.

Sign Up for a New Student Registration Session

New EMC students are required to attend  New Student Orientation to help them feel prepared, connected, and ready for their first day of classes. Orientation provides an opportunity to meet faculty, staff, and fellow students while learning about the resources and tools available to support your success at PTCC.

During orientation, students will:

  • Learn how to access important technology, including eServices, D2L, and student email.
  • Understand college expectations and strategies for academic success.
  • Explore campus resources and support services.
  • Meet faculty and learn more about their program of study.
  • Connect with current students and campus staff.
  • Learn about textbooks, supplies, and preparing for the first week of classes.

Some EMC students may attend a general orientation, while others may participate in a program-specific orientation based on their area of study. Information about orientation dates and registration will be provided after admission and registration for classes.

Orientation is the best way to feel prepared, supported, and connected as you begin your college journey at PTCC.

Some PTCC programs have enrollment limits, cohort capacities, or additional requirements that may restrict PSEO participation.

Construction Technology
Due to cohort capacity, Construction Technology has limited availability for PSEO students during the 2026-2027 academic year. Students who are able to participate full-time may participate. Students who are unable to attend full-time are encouraged to contact the Director of Dual Enrollment to discuss alternative options for exploring careers in the construction industry.

Gunsmithing & Firearms Technology (GSTP)
Due to program requirements, students must be at least 18 years old to fully participate in the Gunsmithing & Firearms Technology program. As a result, many PSEO students are unable to enroll in core GSTP courses while in high school.

Students interested in pursuing GSTP after high school are encouraged to work with the Director of Dual Enrollment to develop an academic pathway that allows them to begin completing general education and other non-GSTP coursework as a PSEO student. This can help students get a head start on the program and reduce the number of courses needed after high school graduation.

Program availability and participation requirements are subject to change. Students interested in programs with special requirements are encouraged to contact the Director of Dual Enrollment to discuss available options and create an individualized plan.
