Youth at Work Grant

The Alternative College Pathway Program would allow students who are unable to access traditional Post-Secondary offerings a pathway to gaining the skills they need for high-growth and in-demand occupations.

Overview

Minnesota Statute 116L.562 authorizes the youth at work equity grant program directing DEED(Department of Employment and Economic Development) to award grants to eligible organizations for the purpose of providing workforce development and training opportunities to economically disadvantaged or at-risk youth ages 16-24.



At-risk is defined in MS 116L.56. For purposes of eligibility determination, the following individuals are considered at risk:

  • A pregnant or parenting youth
  • A youth with limited English proficiency
  • A potential or actual school dropout
  • A  youth in an offender or diversion program
  • A  public assistance recipient or a recipient of group home services
  • A youth with disabilities including learning disabilities
  • A chemically dependent youth or child of drug or alcohol abusers
  • A homeless or runaway youth
  • A youth with basic skills deficiency
  • A youth with an educational attainment of one or more levels below grade level appropriate to age
  • A foster child
  • Economically disadvantaged

Potential students must provide written documentation explaining why they meet the eligibility requirements.

Students who successfully complete the CNA course will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to take the Nursing Assistant Competency Exam to be placed on the MN Nursing Assistant Registry.

In this 3-credit course, students learn about oxy/fuel cutting, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SAMW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes and the safety concerns
connected with them.

To demonstrate their knowledge, students
will practice appropriate welding techniques as applied to various materials and joint types in the flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions. Join a field that is in high demand!

Written documentation on why students meet the eligibility requirements must be sent to Dawn. Once eligibility requirements are confirmed, students will be sent instructions on how to apply to the campus.

Once students have completed the Introductory course, a Career Exploration Advisor will help these student connect to available Life Skills training. Students will be encouraged to take advantage of at least one of these offerings. Life Skills training includes but may not be limited to:

  • Cover Letter/Resume Writing
  • Study Skills
  • Time Management
  • Interviewing Skills

  2. Pine Technical & Community College will email to confirm eligibility requirements are met. Students will be sent step by step instructions on how to apply to the college.
  3. Complete the online application.
  4. A PTCC Customized Training Staff member will send you an email to confirm or deny your place in class and to answer any additional questions.
