Meet PTCC’s Newest Dean, Dr. Ryan Haaland

Dr. Ryan Haaland brings a unique blend of experience in education, science, technology, and leadership to his role as Dean of Industry and Applied Professional Programs at Pine Technical & Community College. Throughout his career, he has pursued opportunities that combine innovation, problem-solving, and student success—making PTCC a natural fit.

Inspired by his upbringing as the son of a high school teacher and farmer, Dr. Haaland developed an early appreciation for hard work, curiosity, and lifelong learning. His passion for science and technology led him to join the U.S. Air Force through ROTC, where he satisfied his fascination with aviation and space while earning his education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia College in Moorhead, a Master of Science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Oxford.

His career has included some remarkable experiences, beginning as a rocket scientist at Edwards Air Force Base during an exciting era of Space Shuttle landings and the development of stealth aircraft. Later, while teaching physics at the U.S. Air Force Academy, he discovered a passion for education that continues to shape his leadership today. During his time at the Academy, he also conducted cutting-edge research involving nanosatellites and upper atmospheric science.

At PTCC, Dr. Haaland is excited to help strengthen and grow the college’s technical programs while preparing students for rewarding careers. He is passionate about continually improving curriculum, expanding hands-on learning opportunities, and building strong partnerships with industry. His vision is to ensure students graduate with not only the technical skills employers need but also the confidence, professionalism, and communication skills that open doors throughout their careers.

Looking ahead, Dr. Haaland hopes to increase enrollment, expand the regional reach of PTCC’s programs, and deepen relationships with business and industry partners. He sees tremendous opportunity in the college’s new labs and modern learning spaces, believing they position PTCC to adapt to emerging technologies and meet the evolving needs of Minnesota’s workforce.

Outside of work, Dr. Haaland enjoys staying active through hockey, camping, Boundary Waters canoe trips, telemark skiing, and spending time outdoors. A self-described “little bit nerdy,” he also enjoys building and repairing audio equipment, from speakers to amplifiers. Known for his calm, approachable leadership style, he believes meaningful work is built on strong relationships, curiosity, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

For students considering a career in the skilled trades or technical fields, his advice is simple: you’re choosing a path that offers meaningful work, exciting opportunities, and the chance to build a fulfilling future.
